Usagi Yojimbo- Kaitō ’84 Issue #1

Usagi Yojimbo- Kaitō ’84 Issue : Writer: Zack Rosenberg Artist: Jared Cullum Cover artist: Jared Cullum

I am so glad to see a respectful adaptation in the vein of Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo!

Set in 1984, we follow a brand new hero, a thief for the rich that takes care of the poor, an expert on martial arts, and his friends, all similar to the ones Yojimbo had: Yukichi the nephew, the clever sibling foxes, the Neko Ninja clan… and now the Yakuza, as you might expect from the timeline.

Set in 1984 Osaka, Kaitō Usagi, direct descendant of Miyamoto, is a cunning, rebellious rabbit. A perilous path appears before him in the form of an offer by the Yakuza: perform a heist and be clear of charges from the police. Thinking about his nephew’s welfare, Kaitō accepts, forever altering his destiny.

An infamous evil spear, a heist, a lot of money involved, what could possibly go wrong?

With some amazing colors and illustrations that very much resemble Sakai’s pencil line, with a twist, the work by Rosenberg and Cullum is noteworthy.
