Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League #2 – Greg Rucka, Writer; Nicola Scott, Artist; Annette Kwok, Colorist
Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: Greg Rucka’s return to DC has been going swimmingly so far, if this heist dramedy starring two of the DCU’s most vicious villainesses is any indication. In the last issue, they met up and Cheshire recruited Cheetah for an insane-sounding mission – robbing the Justice League Watchtower of a codex that supposedly contains the powers of every single DCU hero digitized as a backup. And now that we have a heist, we need something else – a crew. Cheshire insists on keeping the crew small and hand-picked, and they agree that they’re not working with any other a-list villains because of the ego problems. So they’ve got to fill the various spots that go on any heist team – and they need to do it under the radar. One thing I found amusing about this issue was that Lian is casually chilling at her assassin mother’s place, knows Cheetah very well (almost seeing her as an Aunt) and is perfectly fine with their villainous doings. Not sure if it’s entirely accurate, but it is very funny.

The rest of the issue consists of recruitment, with Cheshire first seeking out a woman named Becky who is currently at a casino. It turns out Becky got a little upgrade from Absolute Power, and now has powers over luck and electronics. She’s been using it to hustle a casino for her grandpa – but Cheshire has a better idea. Cheetah, meanwhile, heads over to a sacred Vatican library to recruit Klarion and Teekl, the two of which are currently in the middle of a robbery themselves. This chaotic duo is more than willing to jump on board for the chance at unleashing horrors. And the two unite to check out a third target, Ayla – a tiny pink-haired woman with super-strength who shows up to a protest and wrecks some heavily armored cops to the joy of many readers, no doubt. It’s a fun crew – I’m not sure if it’s complete, unless Klarion and Teekl count as two – but the hype continues to build for this potentially doomed heist.
