Ray: The Infinite Frontier era of DC, leading to the current All In era, has been a boom time for DC, giving just about every franchise a big fresh start – except for one. The Legion of Super-Heroes was missing in action for most of it – until we found out in the All In special that they had been corrupted by Darkseid and were now the Omega Legion. But we’re not the only ones who notice they’re gone and miss them – Superman does too, and after a visit to his childhood home to pick up his flight ring, he decides to head to the future to visit them. But he won’t have to go that far – the three leaders, Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad are waiting for him. They’re ready to make their move, and Superman is their first target – and they waste no time striking brutal blows against Superman’s heroic allies and his civilian family, seeking to drive him over the edge.

Save the day. Via DC Comics.

Or do they? Of course, Saturn Girl is a psychic, and if you wanted to give Superman a push over the edge, you couldn’t do better than to give him a vision of losing everything he holds dear. It comes very close to making him cross the line – until he gets an unexpected visit from the Time Trapper. Of course, we know him better as Doomsday. The idea of Doomsday as a heroic figure is odd, but not unprecedented, and it’s very interesting to see the kind of character he eventually evolves into. Now that Superman knows what’s become of the Legion, there’s only one thing left to do – head into the future to stop them, but he’ll need some help for that. And so Williamson takes one more big swing and brings in one of the most controversial characters in Superman history, a figure who I never thought I’d see again. It’s like the Superman writers are constantly trying to one-up each other, and the readers get the benefits.
