Ray – 9/10

Ray: The Question is usually a more gritty, mystery-based hero, so it’s surprising that her current miniseries has become the most pulse-pounding action book coming out of DC right now. Renee Montoya is trapped on a corrupted Watchtower now controlled by the Cyborg Superman, with the building and even many of her fellow heroes under his control – including her ex-girlfriend, Batwoman. With a ticking clock to the tower exploding, she’s got to make her way through an army of powerful heroes and find a way to neutralize his control. Some of the heroes, like Jaime Reyes, are briefly able to get control of their minds again and provide some help – which points Renee to a dog in containment who has a key chip on his neck that could turn the tide. I definitely approve of Renee getting a new Good Boy ally, and his name will be a big favorite of old Gotham Central fans.

Meanwhile, Cyborg’s madness seems to only be getting worse, as he soon betrays his reluctant ally Eradicator and seems to be looking to take everyone on board down with him. The result is a clock that’s ticking faster than ever, and a surprise appearance from a character that many people have been waiting for since the first issue. The best segment of the issue, however, definitely has to be the reunion between Renee and Kate as they battle their way past mind control and old lingering issues to maybe make their way to a reunion – if they can survive the experience. This book is turning out to not be what I was expecting at all, with the first issue’s mystery being quickly resolved and much of the series essentially being a high-stakes escape room, but it works. Renee is a great character who fits into just about every genre, and it’s great to see her take the lead for a major story.
