Ray: The Tangent Universe is a fascinating place – one of my favorite alternate universes to ever come out of DC. A world where the Atom was the signature hero of the Cold War era and the Cuban Missile Crisis turned into World War 3, it was easily one of the most unique divergences we’ve ever seen. Of course, this version of it is a little more one-note – it has been entirely subsumed by shadows, after all. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some remnants out there, as the Green Lantern starts on her latest mission. She’s in search of missing children – including Lunette, one of the girls who has been folded into her little found family. But as she chases them to an abandoned castle, she finds something seriously disturbing. A colony of seemingly feral children – and watching over them, a massive cat-like monster that tries to kill anything that enters its territory.

Haunted. Via DC Comics.

Obviously, Dell’Edera is the artist on one of the most acclaimed monster-centric comics of all time, so it’s no surprise he’s having a blast with this issue. It’s like if Charlie Adlard did a DCeased one-shot. But a lot of the credit for this issue goes to Brombal as well. His use of this world’s Batman – one of the less-famous Tangent characters, who made his debut in the second wave – adds some interesting mystical overtones to the whole thing. And the true nature of the monster throws a lot of things for a loop. Is the world truly so neatly divided between humans and monsters? I love when a comic makes me doubt my previous perception, and there’s no question that this book keeps building its world with every passing issue. This is what I’m hoping to see more of out of Elseworlds as it makes its comeback – the kind of stories that couldn’t be told anywhere else in the DCU.
