Ray: The first series set in the Tangent Universe for a long time, this book has given us a glimpse at a terrifying world where a supernatural darkness has taken root and only one hero remains. But this Green Lantern isn’t the one we knew from the original one-shots, it’s a young and embittered woman who inherited the flame – and she doesn’t know what to do with it. Her quest has led her to a small town of refuge, where she helped the survivors escape a monster attack – but at the cost of the mayor’s life. The mayor’s daughter, a spirited young girl named Lunnette, has become Green Lantern’s aide of sorts – but right now that mostly seems to consist of trying to get her out of bed. We haven’t really seen a portrayal of a hero with depression in DC before, but trying to survive as the only beacon of light in a post-apocalyptic world filled with horrors would certainly do that to a person.

Tate Brombal’s writing does a great job of establishing the world and characters, but Werther Dell’Edera’s art is the real secret sauce that makes this series so excellent. It should be a surprise given the title he’s most famous for, but Dell’Edera’s monsters are absolutely terrifying and the artist does an incredible job with depicting things lurking in the shadows. The series has a relatively small cast so far, mostly focusing on the growing conflict between Green Lantern and Lunnette, as the latter struggles to find anything that reminds her of the hero she once knew. As they go on the trail of a young boy who disappeared, Green Lantern finds an unexpected connection with his mother. This is a shorter issue than the oversized first, about thirty pages of story, but it manages to deliver surprises and great visuals on just about every single page.
