Review—Scot Snyder′s: The Book of Evil

The Book of Evil Writer: Scott Snyder Artist: Jock

This world is set in the future, where psychopaths run it, calling themselves homo verus, the real men.

You would think that everything has been mass murder, but no, kids are born without knowing if they will become “real humans” and therefore included in the new society, or “animals” (old homo sapiens) and be treated as slaves.

That is interesting.

I mean, interesting enough to check out this combination of different illustration styles made by Jock and falling for the protagonists, a bunch of kids dreaming of escaping. They don′t have names, so they′ve assigned themselves poet names, Poe, Elliot, and Blake, to name a few. Teenagers are set to live together in the Yolk, a yellow-line boundary where psychopaths can′t get at them, and they are meant to serve in different work divisions.

Homer, of course, will tell the tale.

There are a couple of old-fashioned humans who are allowed a better life, like a cartoonist who delivers jokes every day in the paper.

The kids themselves have experience in all the fields, and so, they now understand there might be a way out, a path sent forth by the Book of Evil (curiously enough, the Psychopaths think that humanity is evil and that they are a far better version of them, sound a bell?), led by mysterious messages left in the cartoons for the young ones to find, led by maps.

If they can make it out of the city, they will have to wander the roads and rivers, running from the “real men” and their drones, and perhaps, also run from fearful “animals”, never knowing if they will in turn, become masters or slaves.

This is a thrilling young adult read that creates a solid world, one that is both spooky and fascinating. Safe journey, travelers, may you find what you’re looking for, out there.
