What On Earth July 2024 gross issue, covered in smails

‘What on Earth!’ Magazine – July 2024

Education Reviews

The What on Earth! Magazine July 2024 bumper issue has hit the shelves. This month’s cover story is “That’s Gross!”

What Is What on Earth! Magazine?

What on Earth! magazine delivers bite-sized chunks of reference-book goodness each month. You have all the interest and rigor you’d expect from a leading publisher of reference books with a topical feel and some extra bits of entertainment thrown in. Many children’s magazines are of limited interest, often having plastic tat attached to their front cover, which is usually broken as fast as the magazine’s content is forgotten.

Not so What on Earth! magazine. It’s perfect for inquisitive children of all ages. Not only does it cover a dazzling array of topics, it also has some great puzzles, jokes, and a child-friendly quiz.

The magazine is available in the UK and Worldwide (including the U.S.) and is available in both physical and digital formats. If you take out a subscription, you’ll make a saving on the cover price.

Why Read What on Earth! Magazine – July 2024?

This issue is for July AND August  – an issue to take you and the children all through the summer (Assuming you live north of the equator of course – see What on Earth’s excellent Solstice book for more details!)

We’re looking at all things gross this month, as exemplified by the snails and slugs that my garden is plagued by.

There are 99 gross facts, broken down across three subjects. “Gross Humans,” did you know that April 23rd was International Nose Picking Day? “Gross History,” with a surprisingly large number of earwax-based facts, and “Gross Animals,” which, perhaps unsurprisingly, focuses an awful lot on dung.

Beyond the grossness, we have an Olympic timeline, ready for Paris 2024, a fabulous page of breathtaking photos, and the lowdown on the various methods used to train astronauts for a trip to Mars. For parents who don’t mind a mess, there’s a feature on the science of slime, as well as a recipe for how to make it. There’s also a recipe for ice cream – just don’t confuse the two!

This month’s infographic focuses on the world’s largest creatures: land and sea, contemporary and prehistoric. The big read looks at the history of war in the 20th Century. Finally, because it’s a bumper summer issue, there’s an extra 16 pages of puzzle, games, and activities to help absorb some of those boring rainy holiday days. We seem to have more than our fair share of those in the UK, right now, but I hope that wherever you’re enjoying your copy of What on Earth! magazine, the weather gods are being kind to you.

Many thanks to What on Earth Books for sending me copies of the magazine to review.
