On Saturday I took the drive into Dallas to attend the a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Regional at Southern Methodist University. Over 50 High School teams competed for fame, glory, and a trip to the FRC Championship in Atlanta.

The event started on Thursday with robot inspection and practice rounds, and continues through Saturday morning with qualifying matches. After the qualifying matches, the top 8 teams get to draft other teams for their alliance. The eight alliances will then compete in a single elimination tournament with the best two of three matches advancing to the next round.

There were a couple of close games in the quarter and semi finals, but in the end, teams 148 the Robowranglers, 1817 the RoboRaiders, and 2016 the Mighty Monkey Wrenches took the finals with a comfortable margin. The other finalists were teams 2352 Metal Mayhem, 1429 Team Kaos, and 704 the Warriors.

The Mighty Monkey Wrenches also went home with the Regional Chairman’s Award for the work they do promoting FIRST, advocating for Closed Captioning for the FRC Webcasts, and requesting and getting sign language interpreters for deaf students at FRC events. Congratulations!
