The Great Big Beautiful Podcast, Episode 127: Judd Winick
You can listen on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and YouTube; you can follow the RSS feed; or you can listen right here!
This week, we welcome Judd Winick to the show. Winick is a graphic novelist who’s played in both the DC universe (by writing Batman, Catwoman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, and the Outsiders, among others) and the Marvel universe (Exiles). In addition to comics, he’s also written the Batman: Under the Red Hood animated film, was writer/producer for Hulu’s The Awesomes, and created The Life and Times of Juniper Lee for Cartoon Network.
Recently, though, Winick is perhaps best known for his all-ages series HiLo, which follow the misadventures of a boy named HiLo who very literally crashes to Earth. Book 3 (The Great Big Boom) came out earlier this year. If you’ve got a young reader, HiLo should be in his or her pile. You can thank me later.
On this episode, we chat with Winick about his career in comics, great books for kids, whether comics have forgotten how to be fun, his time on MTV’s The Real World, his series of This Makes Me Happy strips, and his marriage proposal—which, I guarantee you, is one of the most original proposal stories you’ll ever hear.
