Facebook Best Practices

  • Try to build engagement versus likes. You can craft posts that are geared towards click-thru, or you can craft them for engagement. Better choice is engagement, because it’s easier, and the click-thru will follow when you get volume.
  • Big links more likely to get clicked; don’t use bit.ly or similar.
  • Use larger images (similar to blog best practice).
  • When you add posts from blog, you can edit titles and clean up excerpts to tailor to the format
  • Multiple re-prints hit different viewers due to the algorithm, so re-post through the week
  • Promote readers to use the “Add to Interest List” choice to get folks to subscribe to page and get all the content
  • Use blog to get folks promote
  • Make sure you Like comments, helps interaction and reach
  • Frequency: about 4 posts a day is ideal, spread out. Best time slots are 8am PT and 8pm PT. Sunday is best day (again, 8am and 8pm) for eyeballs. Thur night and Friday are your worst days Pretty much goes down a little each day after Sunday and starts to pick back up on the weekend

Sometimes when you share a post on Facebook, you get a blank preview, or an incorrect preview. Here’s how you fix that.

1) First, go here https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/
2) Second, enter the link you want to share
3) Third, click debug
4) Fourth, ignore the information that returns. Just scroll down to see the preview. If the preview is empty, scroll back up and Click “Fetch new scrape information”
5) That will clear Facebook’s caching issue and you can share the post properly

You can also use a bookmarklet:

1) Create bookmark in your browser titled “GD FB FIx”

2) Paste this into the URL:

     javascript:(function(){if(window.GDAC_TestArticle !==undefined){GDAC_TestArticle ();}else{document.body.appendChild(document.createElement('script')).src='https://geekdad.com/js/fbScrape.js';}})();

3) Visit your article page and click the bookmark any time you need to fix a preview.
