Ray: Joshua Williamson is preparing to bring his epic Flash run to a close, and before he gets there he’s got to wrap up the battle with Paradox. He’s united three speedsters—Barry Allen, the evil Eobard Thawne, and the ruthless Godspeed—to recover the timeline from the cosmic maniac, and the Flash legacy is being erased piece by piece. But before they can take the fight to Paradox, they have to agree on their tactic. Thawne isn’t interested in any solution but killing Paradox before he was transformed, and even facing cosmic annihilation Barry isn’t willing to compromise his morals. Godspeed has been a wild card over the course of this run, but in this storyline, he seems to have finally seen the error of his ways—after his ordeal at Paradox’s hands—and he becomes the second voice Barry needs to get Thawne to go along with the program. I’d read a whole run of this strange dynamic of teeth-clenched teamwork.

Rafa Sandoval has been one of the DCU’s secret weapons for a while, delivering epic widescreen action on several of the company’s top books. He’s perfect for a story that centers around time collapsing in on itself, and the tension of the main showdown as Barry and Godspeed hold off Paradox while Thawne holds their fate in his hands is excellent. It’s a brief hope spot in a very intense storyline—and then Williamson pulls the rug out from under us with a fantastic gut punch you don’t see coming, just after victory has been achieved. It looks like we finally know what the “final boss” of Williamson’s run is going to be, and he’s got one more arc left to deliver a genuinely epic finale. I have little doubt that when this wraps, it’s going to be considered one of the all-time great Flash runs and Williamson will be on to his next epic DC gig for another memorable run.
