Last year, I had the opportunity to review the Original Puffy Blanket from Rumpl, after the company sent me one to try out. While I wasn’t sold on the name, the blanket itself was very good. It combined the best of a sleeping bag with the ability to withstand dogs and teenagers in a lightweight blanket that rolled up into a convenient stuff sack. A month or so ago, the company sent me its latest offering to check out, the NanoLoft Puffy Blanket.
The big difference with this new blanket is the fill. The Original Puffy Blanket used stuffing that was 100% post-consumer recycled. At the time, I was offered a down version, but that wouldn’t fly around here (no pun intended) with the vegetarians. I thought it was pretty good, but Rumpl has developed a synthetic down alternative that it says is significantly better. Here’s how the company describes its NanoLoft insulation:
“Unlike traditional synthetic fills, our 100% post-consumer recycled NanoLoft™ insulation is made up of tiny circular clusters of fiber that mimic the properties of down clusters. This technology traps warmth inside small pockets of air to efficiently preserve heat, regardless of conditions.”
What does that mean in real life? Well, the NanoLoft Puffy Blanket doesn’t feel quite so “puffy” as the original, and it weighs several ounces less. Presumably that’s because the NanoLoft insulation is more effective, so less is needed. That being said, it is really comfortable and very warm. And it retains the features we really liked about the original: the cool cover that mimics the feeling of a sleeping bag, the solid construction, the corner loops for tying down outdoors or hanging, DWR water repellent treatment, and it’s machine washable.
Now that we’re into fall and the evenings are getting downright cold, the NanoLoft Puffy Blanket is shining…
