This offbeat all-ages crossover comic seems to be coming to an end in the coming months, and its tribute to the Silver Age of DC Comics and the oddball mostly forgotten Hanna-Barbera cartoons it regularly crossed its Mystery Machine-based heroes over with will be missed.
But it seems to be going out on a high note with this penultimate (for now) issue, Scooby-Doo Team-Up #48, focusing on The Flash’s most famous villains – the Rogues! These gentlemen (and women) thieves have lured Scooby and his gang back to Central City under the pretense of helping the Flash, but they quickly kidnap them to help in their own mystery. It seems their crimes are being foiled and their ill-gotten gains stolen by former Rogue The Top.
There’s just one problem – The Top has been dead for years now, and Golden Glider is determined to find who’s impersonating her deceased boyfriend and bring him to justice.
To lure the Top out of hiding, the Rogues come up with the idea of a score he won’t be able to resist – robbing the Flash museum. As they burst in and take the Flash’s memorabilia, I was amused by just how calm the kindly proprietor of the museum was – clearly he’s been through this quite a few times.
This is one of the more action-packed issues of the run, with a lot of good one-liners but higher stakes as our heroes are essentially hostages of a group of villains and forced to participate in criminal activity. The reveal of the Top’s true identity makes sense – this isn’t the first time the villain’s shown up – and there’s a fun twist at the end of the issue that brings in some fan favorites. I’m always impressed with this series’ internal continuity, as it regularly references past adventures. DC doesn’t have all that much all-ages content in single issues, so this title’s absence will be felt once it wraps its run.
