The board game (and board game-related!) news that caught our attention for the week ending May 3, 2019.
Gaming News
- American Mensa has announced the winners of Mensa Select awards, and in similar news, the folks behind the Origins conference have announced the nominees for the Origins Awards, which will be presented at the Origins Game Fair in June.
- Flash Point: Fire Rescue‘s, one of my personal favorite co-op games, new expansion Tragic Events introduces three new specialists and card decks to add to the action. It was originally funded on Kickstarter a couple of years ago, and is due in stores in June.
- Charterstone, which was one of GeekDad’s finalists for our first Game of the Year award, will be coming to digital in 2020 from Acram.
- Shadowrun turns 30 this year, and to celebrate the RPG is getting a sixth edition release, the first new edition in 6 years.
- Asmodee, Owner Of All Things, has launched a new fiction imprint, Aconyte, which will seek to publish novels based on its boardgame properties.
- As the boardgame industry continues to grow and expand in truly unprecedented ways, publisher AEG has decided to take a different approach. As outlined in a blog post by AEG’s John Zinser, their new mantra is “make fewer games.” Essentially, the idea is to focus on quality over quantity.
- Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: The Adventure Game will bring RPG-style gaming to the Goblin King’s magical realm this fall.
- Shopping for boardgames may be a bit easier this holiday season, as Tru Kids Brands, which now owns the naming rights to Toys-R-Us, has announced plans to bring back the iconic retailer, although in smaller form, with stores that are from a fifth to a half of the size of the older stores.
- The Alien franchise is making its way to tabletop for RPG fans with the upcoming release of Alien: The Roleplaying Game. Screaming will be allowed as long as you don’t play in space, and, of course, every session will be required to end with “game over, man. Game over.”
