Ray: One of the things I enjoy about Scooby Doo Team-Up is the way it’s a highly accurate tribute to obscure Hanna-Barbera cartoons that almost no one remembers. As someone who is familiar with most of them from the DC/Hanna-Barbera crossover events, it can be a little jarring to see what the characters originally were. Case in point – I assumed Magilla Gorilla was always a talking Gorilla who was a movie star, like he was in the crossover with Nightwing! Nope, the original status quo was much simpler – Magilla is a talking gorilla who works in the pet shop of a surly but well-meaning pet shop owner, who’s constantly frustrated by the messes Magilla makes. There’s a little girl who wants to adopt Magilla, and an evil mad scientist who wants to experiment on him – pretty standard Hanna-Barbera fare, at least until the Mystery Machine crew shows up looking to get Scooby a bath at the pet shop.

A visit to Peebles Pet Shop. Via DC Comics.

After Magilla makes another mess during the bath, Mr. Peebles loses his temper and sells him for a nickel to the obviously evil Dr. Hasenpfeffer. Magilla is taken to the spooky mad scientist castle on a hill, where the bad doctor intends to use him in strange body-swapping experiments. When Mr. Peebles regrets his decision and teams up with the Mystery Machine gang to get Magilla back, they get involved in a bizarre adventure that includes encounters with mutant animals and various people getting their heads swapped with other people. There’s no real mystery in this issue, just a never-ending series of wacky antics, so it’s definitely not one of my favorite issues of the series. Still, it’s a fun tribute to an old-school comic that’s largely been lost to the ages and I’m hoping this series has a lot more bizarre adventures in its future. With its anniversary coming up, it’s probably got some big surprises in store.
