Featured Gaming Re-Roll Tabletop Games

The board game (and board game-related!) news that caught our attention for the week ending February 15, 2019.

Gaming News

  • SXSW has announced its nominees for Tabletop Game of the Year. You can visit the SXSW website to cast your vote for Brass: Birmingham, Everdell, Keyforge: Call of the Archons, Root, and Kolossal Games.
  • Evolution is coming to your screen in video game format, and to celebrate, publisher North Star Games is giving away 1000 copies of the board game. 10 players will be randomly selected from those who play online for the first 100 days to receive a copy. The board game is our featured image this week.
  • Fantasy Flight has announced the upcoming release of Star Wars: Outer Rim, a stand-alone game where players take on the roles of iconic scoundrels and bounty hunters. It is due to be released in the second quarter of this year.
  • Fantasy Flight also announced a huge new wave of ships for X-Wing Miniature Battles 2nd Editionincluding the Naboo Royal N-1, the Hyena-class Droid Bomber, the Resistance Transport, the TIE/vn Silencer, the Millennium Falcon, the A/SF-01 B-Wing, the VT-49 Decimator, the TIE/sf Fighter, Deluxe Movement Tools, and Range Ruler. All are due in the second quarter this year.
  • Hokkaido, the second game in the Nippon series from Renegade Game Studio after Honshu, was released this week.
  • Those of us over a certain age will remember spending hours pushing tiny cardboard squares around a board as we shepherded humanity from the dawn of mankind to the modern age in Avalon Hill’s classic Civilization. Soon, modern gamers can do the same, but with rounder pieces of cardboard and presumably in much less time with the upcoming release of Z-Man’s Hadarascheduled for “spring 2019.”
  • Last week, I mentioned that USAopoly would soon be releasing licensed versions of Talisman. This week comes news that the company is rebranding itself as “The OP” for its 25th anniversary, and that it has entered into a licensing agreement with Laika Studios. First up from that agreement: Coraline Monopoly.
  • Also turning a quarter century this year is Gamewright, which is celebrating with the debut at the upcoming Toy Fair of Sushi Roll, a dice game in the Sushi Go family.

  1. Tiny Epic Unannounced Game should totally be the title of an actual game – maybe set collection involving competing collectors or designers of boardgames competing for the newest hits?

    1. As it turns out, the game was announced between the time I logged my play and the publication. 🙂 It’s Tiny Epic Tactics, which launches next Tuesday, and I’ll have a review then!
