The board game (and board game-related!) news that caught our attention for the week ending February 7, 2019.
Gaming News
- Villainous, the extremely fun game where you take on the role of a classic Disney villain, is getting a sequel: Villainous: Wicked to the Core. Originally due to be announced at Toy Fair, news of the game was accidentally leaked this week, and we here at Re-Roll have been given permission from Ravensburger to mention it here. The game, which can be played either as an expansion to the original or as a stand-alone game, will be available as a Target exclusive through the end of March. [Edit: Updated the description of the game to identify it as a sequel rather than an expansion.]
- Black Mirror episode “Nosedive,” in which Bryce Dallas Howard lives in a society where your real-life value is based on your standing in social media (something being tested in China), now has a board game version. It’s not necessarily the episode of the show I would have chosen to convert to a game, but it’s a start.
- Racoon Tycoon, which Jonathan Liu reviewed when it was on Kickstarter, is now available.
- The contest to name Gen Con’s new dragon mascot has been narrowed down to three choices: Indy, Aurix, and Genevieve. I’m just going to come right out and say I’m very disappointed by the community here since Gygax was the only correct choice, but if you want to vote on those three much-less-great choices, you can head over to Gen Con’s Twitter account.
- If you’re like me and think that Star Wars: Destiny is a pretty great game, but who (like me) think that drafts are the only tournaments for the game worth playing, you’ll be excited—like me—to hear that Fantasy Flight has announced that, at long last, there’s a new draft set coming out for the game. The set provides a basic set of cards to use to supplement what you get in your drafted expansions, and should offer some nice variety to draft games.
- Captain Marvel will be hitting theaters soon, and she’ll also be joining the Heroclix world. 22 different models are due to be released this month as part of Heroclix: Captain Marvel.
- Games Workshop has entered into an agreement with USAopoly to create licensed versions of the classic fantasy game Talisman. So if what’s been missing from your life is a version of the game that references popular spots on your alma mater’s campus, your life will soon be complete.
