Kickstarter Tabletop Alert: ‘New Salem’ Relaunches Today

New Salem, a card-drafting, hidden-role game from Overworld Games, is back on Kickstarter!

I first reviewed New Salem back in 2014 when the first edition was seeking funding, and then again last fall when Overworld Games introduced its second edition, which also includes the Constable expansion. If you want to find out more about how the game plays (and why I like it), read my full review here.

Unfortunately, the Kickstarter didn’t reach its funding goal in October, so Overworld Games has adjusted its campaign a bit and relaunches today. I think there may have been some confusion about what exactly this second campaign is for, because it is both a new edition and an expansion, and it may not have been clear who it’s intended for. The short version is that, whether you already own New Salem or not, there are options for you:

  • For owners of the first edition of New Salem: you can get an upgrade kit that adds the new cards (plus new versions of some existing cards); it has no box and you’ll just add/replace components in your existing box. ($14)
  • For those who don’t own New Salem, you can back for the full game. ($32)
  • Both of these also have a deluxe option, which will have a larger box (even if you already own the 1st edition), wooden tokens, larger character cards, an event mat, a metal coin Despair tracker, and a burlap bag. ($33 for existing owners, $49 for new owners)
  • All of these options incorporate the Constable expansion, as well as a bonus Event pack that, while not Kickstarter-exclusive, will be in limited availability outside of the Kickstarter.

I’m excited about New Salem, and was bummed that it didn’t fund, because I kept playing my prototype version after the campaign ended and wished that other people could also experience it for themselves. I like the combination of card-drafting and hidden roles, and the fact that it can handle up to 8 players but isn’t a party game.

Update: The launch has been delayed but you can still view the Kickstarter page and click the “Notify me at launch” button to get an email when it goes live.
