Ray: The penultimate issue of the strangest crossover DC has published in years arrives with a bang, as the various forces each scheming to seize control of the power of Eternia collide with a massive explosion. Following last issue’s showdown that left Damian Wayne’s Batman dead and the evil Wonder Woman on the brink of death, Skeletor has seized the power of Shazam and Superman has Prince Adam at his mercy.
The fallen dictator of Earth only breaks from his cruel plan when he hears that Skeletor is on Apokalips, planning to control the entire universe. And if there’s one thing a villain hates, it’s a villain who’s more successful than him. The Apokalips segments are probably the least successful of the issue, relying too much on obscure characters from both universes running around fighting – Mantis! Evil-Lynn! But with the crisis growing out of control, old enemies have no choice but to form a temporary truce.
That truce includes bringing in enemies Superman had long vanquished, including Supergirl – exiled to the Phantom Zone. This more seasoned and hard-edged version of Kara is very much still a hero, but she’s itching for a shot at her twisted cousin. The showdown between Darkseid and Skeletor has some great scenes and ends with Darkseid being vanquished by a piece of Eternia lore that I didn’t expect to see here.
The end of the issue features another surprising casualty – but it’s not clear if all of them are going to stick given the cliffhanger. This story reminds me a lot of Zero Hour in some ways, as a fallen hero comes upon the idea that he could go back and fix everything.
For a crossover between a video game and an 80’s cartoon toy line, it’s a lot better than it has any right to be. But for a sequel, can I hope for DC Bombshells Meet She-Ra and the Princesses of Power? Get Netflix on the phone!
