The Many Lives of Doctor Who: A First Glimpse Into the 13th Doctor

Titan Comics presents a myriad of artists reliving 12 moments, one for each of the previous doctors.

Writer: Richard Dinnick Artists: Arianna Florean, Brian Williamson, Claudia SG Iannicello, Giorgia Sposito, Iolanda Zanfardino, Mariano Laclaustra, Neil Edwards, Pasquale Qualano, Rachael Stott.

As the excitement builds up and we anxiously await the beginning of the season, here is a comic that will both work as a reminder and an introduction for the new adventures led by actress Jodie Whittaker.

As her transformation begins, her life flashes before her eyes, and of course, it is a life led by twelve previous incarnations: glimpses of adventures—all drawn differently from the first doctor to the last—all facing foes and challenges, with a special take on the female companions that have always stood by her in the past.

A key concept is also addressed: the fluidity of gender in time lords; a novel idea first introduced by Neil Gaiman and now a fact, since the doctor is preparing herself for this change on screen.

It is very coincidental that the 13th doctor will happen to be female: 13 are the lunar months, as opposed to the 12th month calendar imposed by calculation and solar revolutions. Thirteen moon phases happen in a year, every year, without the need to add a 29th of February every so often. As women respond to this cycle, I think it is only fitting that the 13th incarnation will happen to be a her.
