Ray: Injustice 2 #35, the penultimate issue of the regular series, takes a break from the world-shattering action for…a wedding?
A wedding of mutated criminals, at that. Now that Grodd and Brainiac have formed an alliance, the evil Gorilla takes back control of his tribe and prepares to wage war against Solovar. Meanwhile, the Suicide Squad is led by Man-Bat into the sewers to find Killer Croc, who is none too happy to be disturbed. He is all but ready to eat them until the Squad tells him they’re here to arrange a Gorilla City wedding for him and Orca before their baby arrives. Croc agrees to leave the sewers and find Orca, proposing to her. The dialogue between the Squad as they watch this go on is some of the funniest material Taylor has written. His deadpan Man-Bat in particular is a gem – why haven’t we seen more of this guy in the series? And just like that, the villains of Injustice 2 are planning for a wedding.
The moment in this issue that will have the most people talking is a brief reveal that Harley and Ivy may have gotten married in Vegas. Shame we didn’t get to see that in the comic, but hey – maybe DC can rectify that in the Harley Quinn title down the line!
But the wedding segment is a really fun light moment in this darker universe. Even Ra’s Al Ghul shows up to offer his well-wishes – and a wedding gift, in the form of deactivating the brain bombs of Croc and Orca. He didn’t quite think this through, as the villains are now free of any restraints and proceed to rip Ra’s arm off and turn him over to the leaders of Grodd’s army before heading off to their happily ever after. So that’s the story of the villains wrapped up before the grand finale. Soon we’ll be catching up with the heroes as this series wraps up to tie in with the video game. As a whole, there is no way a video game tie-in should have been this good, and that’s a testament to how good Tom Taylor’s writing is.
