Re-Roll: This Week’s Tabletop Game News for Week 42 of 2018

Featured Gaming Re-Roll Tabletop Games

The board game (and board game-related!) news that caught our attention for the week ending October 19, 2018.

  • The day has arrived (well, on Wednesday)! Terraforming Mars is now out on Steam, complete with both local and online multiplayer. Thankfully, it’s only on Windows, so I’m out of the picture. Otherwise, I would spend so much time on this and money, buying all the eventual expansions and everything. But like I said, Windows only.
  • Remember the beautiful and stark game, Concept? The 2013 deduction party game was fantastic and now it’s back, but for kids. This cooperative version is called Concept Kids Animals, which feels like it needs some punctuation, but whatever. It’s out this month!
  • Z-Man has acquired the popular area control game, Lords of Vegas. They’ve also got the UP! expansion and, soon, the Underworld expansion! Nice game. It’d be a shame if something happened to it.
  • This week’s image is from The Grimm Forest (read our review).
  • FFG went into details about how Keyforge organized play will work.
  • Renegade announced a book of hooks and story guidelines for those playing their RPG, Kids on Bikes. Look for it (and its great cover) in February.
  • I’ll buy anything with the Carcassonne name, so you know I’ll be adding Carcassonne: Safari! to my collection when it hits shelves later this year. The standalone game is part of their “Around the World” series that includes Amazonas, Gold Rush, and South Seas.
  • I just got a copy of Trapwords delivered this morning. It’s a word game from CGE that’s debuting at Essen with wide distribution quickly following. It looks very challenging — and fun!
  • Scheduled to hit shelves this week are Iello’s 8Bit Box, old meeting the dead in Axis & Allies & Zombies, surprise hit from Game Salute, Everdell, and the new betting/action point allowance affair, Western Legends.

At GeekDad, we write a lot about tabletop games. Here’s what we’ve written about this past week:

  • Simon Yule was once again into the breach with his 74th session of Curse of Strahd.
  • Logan Giannini checked out Trade on the Tigris, the set collecting, (believe it or not) trading game.
  • Robin Brooks took Dized, the app that teaches you board games, for a test drive.
  • Then there’s Jonathan Liu. That dude reviews some games. This week, he had Penk!, a roll and write you can fit in your pocket, Dreams of Tomorrow, a tableau building game funding on Kickstarter today, Tidal Blades: Heroes of the Reef, a worker placement (check out the bottom of the box—it says “Part I”!) from the folks who brought us The Grimm Forest, and Daredevil, a press your luck game that has nothing to do with that blind lawyer guy.

Finally, here’s what some of the GeekDad Crew has been playing this week:

  • Jonathan Liu: Dreams of Tomorrow, Evil High Priest, 8Bit Box, KOI, Moneybags, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: A Gemstone Mining Game, Spy Club, Daredevil, Wallet, Monarch
  • Michael Pistiolas: 5-Minute Marvel, Dragon Farkle, Bohnanza, Dragonfire, Bear Valley, Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game, Villainous, Downforce, Monumental, Forbidden Sky, Glyph, Lucidity, Zombicide: Green Horde, Warhammer Adventure Card Game
  • Dave Banks: Spirits of the Forest, Rise of Queensdale, Terraforming Mars, Last Friday, Campy Creatures
