Geek Links: ‘Algorithms’ — New Magazine Aimed at Young Coders

A new Kickstarter is attempting to raise funds to provide a bimonthly magazine (6 issues per year) to young coders called Algorithms Magazine. The magazine is also attempting to reach funding levels that will provide support for a website that will offer content for parents and teachers looking for support material to go along with the magazine content.

From the Kickstarter page:

The activities at the beginning of the magazine will be geared toward younger students (grades 2-4) while the offerings at the end will appeal to students in grades 5-8.  Each child will find real world concept connections, coding opportunities, playful unplugged puzzles, and examples of how other students learned computer science or how they are using it to make the world a better place.

As someone who teaches a variety of summer camps that include coding camps, I can tell you that when you find a child who really takes to programming/coding, it can be a real challenge to stay in front of them and provide them with the right learning material. A lot of what you’ll find on the bookstore shelves are books for an older audience. Thankfully, more and more books are releasing that are geared to a younger crowd, but I’ve yet to see a coding magazine devoted to a younger age range until this Kickstarter for Algorithms Magazine.

A digital subscription is only $20 per year… a print-and-mailed copy of the magazine will be $25. Stretch goals will allow support videos for each issue to be created, additional pages to be added to each issue, and even a summer issue to keep the kiddos engaged while school is out. (The regular issues will arrive during the “standard” school year of September through June.)

If you’ve got a young coder under your roof or maybe you’re a teacher looking for some additional resources for your programming classes, take a look at the Algorithms Magazine Kickstarter. The fundraising ends on September 16, 2018.
