Focus Home Interactive Releases ‘Vampyr’ — A Review

Gaming Videogames

Focus Home Interactive and Dontnod Entertainment bring a new atmospheric vampire RPG to PC, PS4, and XboxOne called Vampyr!

What is it?

Vampyr is set in London during World War I and the Spanish Flu outbreak. You are a doctor who wakes up among the dead and realizes that you are now afflicted with vampirism. Within the first few seconds, you bite your own sister due to your now intense thirst for blood. After realizing what you have done, your quest to understand and conquer your affliction begins. Using a wide range of weapons and your wits, you travel the London streets looking for answers and defending the living. You decide if people are prey or if you are their salvation.

My Thoughts on Vampyr

I am a lover of atmospheric games, so Vampyr is right up my alley. (Pun intended.) After playing Bloodborne for over a hundred hours, I have been searching for a game that would put me into a similar world, and Vampyr has done so. During play, you can build your character through a sophisticated collection of skill trees. Players will also craft weapons to help them stave off a large group of beasts. Some reviewers have complained the graphics in Vampyr feel as though they came from the previous generation of consoles, but I felt that they were simply an artistic choice and did not affect my enjoyment of the game at all.

There are some slow load times, but, once again, I felt that it was a minor issue. For an AA game, it has a lot of polish and sophistication and can compete with many AAA games when you compare gameplay and mood. The music in Vampyr also adds to the immersive experience. There are roughly 30 hours of gameplay to complete the main storyline, but there is an abundance of side quests to expand gameplay. With all of the side quests, I never felt as if I was mired in fetch quests that felt hollow and were used to pad out the game time. Learning and using vampiric powers made me feel like a dark superhero, which was fun and satisfying.

Recommendation and Score

If you are a lover of vampires, RPGs, and moody horror games, Vampyr is a must-have. In an age where horror video games are almost solely zombie shooters, it is great to see vampires get there just due. Focus Home Interactive is also working on a game based on Werewolf: The Apocalypse that I am looking forward to!

Graphics: 7/10

Sounds: 8/10
