Review—Koshchei the Deathless #5—The End Is Near

Comic Books Entertainment Reviews

Koshchei the Deathless , Writer: Mike Mignola, Artist: Ben Stenbeck, Colorist: Dave Stewart, Cover Artist: Mike Mignola

Koschchei the Deathless is approaching the conclusion of his tale.

What you can tell for certain in this issue is that, sometimes, a story can be a tricky thing.

Warning, Spoilers Below

A minion, a slave, a monster, Koshchei has become all of this. With his soul in the hands of the Baba Yaga, he cannot die. He can only kill whomever and whatever she tells him to kill. With her constant thirst for power, this means disposing of some very powerful and magical creatures, at land and even at the bottom of the sea.

Besides, she has a grudge. There could have been love between them, but now she acts in anger and spite, condemning him to do as she pleases and discarding him when there is nothing left to do.

This issue is approaching its conclusion, but does so with a side note. A detail, a glimpse of hope for this condemned man; even when he is at his most desperate, Koshchei succeeds in doing a good thing. He decides to spare the soul of Vasilissa the Beautiful, a famous maiden in Russian Folklore. This woman has appeared in Hellboy before, and, not only she has led a decent life, but, also, she has already had a decent death. What Koshchei decides to save is what is left of her spirit, thus taking her forever out of Baba Yaga′s reach.

For this he will pay. And we shall see what Baba Yaga will have in store for his former lover in the last issue, due next month.
