As the discovery of what Lakeside really is approaches its conclusion, we are taken into another journey, one of recruitment.
American Gods is all about America′s holy places, and I would speculate there is not a holier place than Las Vegas.
Of course, what you worship there is money. And from that worship a mysterious, anonymous, and nearly invisible god is born. One that is willing to help Wednesday, in exchange of a bottle of Soma.
Soma, we are to find out, is distilled belief. A concentrated liquid that can feed a god for a long time. How Soma is harvested we have no idea, but, of course, Mr. Wednesday has some in reserve.
Once the deal is complete, Shadow is back to being Mike Ainsel, once again residing at Lakeside. There, he will go to the local library in order to inform himself about eagle stones, thunderbirds, and much more. (He will not go online, since the Technical Kid is lurking on computers, and Shadow will not risk facing him yet). In a whim, he will pick up an account of Lakeside′s past, a book that will be eye-opening for him.
I love the feel of this comic, especially because it respects the novel so much. All Gaiman′s words are there: all his little nuances, his quirky dialogues, his mysteries. It truly feels like his work, one that I am enjoying immensely, revisiting it in graphic form.
