See How They Re-Created the Winchester Mystery House for ‘Winchester’

Entertainment Movies

One of the most popular tourist attractions in the San Jose area has nothing at all to do with Silicon Valley or the tech industry. Instead, it’s the Winchester Mystery House, a sprawling mansion built in the late 1800s by Sarah Winchester, the widow of the man who invented the Winchester Rifle.

The house was also the location for the recent movie Winchester, which involves Sarah (played by Oscar-winner Helen Mirren) believing that the house is haunted by those killed by her husband’s revolutionary firearm.

Below is an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip in which co-directors Peter and Michael Spierig, Mirren, and co-star Sarah Snook discuss how the filmed on-location at the House as well as the intricate recreation build in Melbourne studios.

The movie is being released on Digital today, and on Blu-ray and DVD on May 1.

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, you can purchase tickets to tour the mansion on the Winchester House website. And if you time your trip just right, you can even take a flashlight tour of the house on Friday the 13th.
