Over the last few issues, Scooby-Doo Team-Up has evolved from a fun diversion mainly meant for kids to a fantastic tribute to bygone eras and characters from DCU history (as well as largely forgotten Hanna-Barbera characters). Scooby-Doo Team-Up continues that pattern, with a mystery set in Midvale, as Supergirl contacts the Mystery Machine Crew for help with a very personal mystery – her childhood home is being haunted by the ghosts of Argo City. This issue spins out of the Supergirl status quo most associated with the 1950s, where Kara was adopted from an orphanage by the Danvers family and took on the secret identity, Linda Lee. Now a college student who fights crime on the side, she’s deeply unnerved by the specters of her parents taunting her for not being able to save them from Krypton’s destruction.

The other half of this issue, and the denser and wackier half, is the mystery of how Linda’s pet cat, Streaky, keeps getting superpowers. Complicating this is the fact that after chasing Streaky into the basement, Scooby winds up able to fly as well.

The rivalry between the superpowered dog and cat is hilarious, as they both cause no small amount of chaos before eventually learning to work together. The reveal of the villain isn’t much of a mystery – Nasthalia Luthor is a character from old Supergirl comics, and arguably her arch-nemesis – but I was a bit surprised by how violent her plot got. It’s not often you see a character pull a gun and shoot someone in a Scooby Doo comic.

Overall, though, this issue is a treat for Supergirl fans, with a very sweet and affecting last-page twist that I hope is followed up on in a future issue. This is one of the DCU’s most underrated titles at the moment.
