Every issue of Injustice 2 brings something new and Injustice 2 #22 is no exception. Sometimes, Tom Taylor is delivering a final goodbye between Blue Beetle and Booster Gold that serves both characters brilliantly – and sometimes he’s sending a bunch of Gorillas to war. The last issue saw Gorilla Grodd make his move against the Ra’s Al Ghul-aligned Gorilla King Solovar, backed up with an army of guerilla gorillas (heh). Solovar here is distinctly less benevolent than he usually is, which makes this more of a fight of evil against evil, although Solovar represents the side of order and Grodd chaos. Poison Ivy proves key to deciding the battle, and I have to say how consistently amused I am that Taylor actually seems to want to make the Killer Croc/Orca relationship a thing beyond a one-off gag. But things go bad in a hurry when Ra’s decides to rush the Amazo android out the door.
With Amazo targeting Delhi, one of the most populated cities in the world, as part of his campaign of destruction, the focus shifts to Khandaq. What’s interesting about this issue is the fact that there are no good guys. Wonder Woman and Black Adam are loyalists to Superman’s old regime, while Supergirl is the closest thing to a benevolent figure but is still working for them. The few remaining heroes don’t show up till the ending when Bruce Wayne puts out a call to all his remaining allies to fight back, and Conner Kent is finally strong enough to rejoin the battle – armed with a super-suit that hasn’t meant anything good in this world for a long time. It’s a chaotic, explosive issue that sets up just how bad things have gotten in this world – but maybe it’s the darkest before the dawn. Maybe. In this world, things never tend to go the heroes’ way.
