The Magicians Season 3 premieres tonight, January 10th, 2018 on Syfy. If you haven’t set your DVR yet make sure you get on that right away as season 3 looks to be the most interesting one so far.

Warning: Spoilers for The Magicians Seasons 1 and 2 ahead. Stop now and run away if you’ve not yet seen the first two seasons.

Season 1 began with lifelong friends Quentin and Julia testing for entry to Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy. Quentin gains entry, Julia does not. Quentin goes on to learn about magic in a structured and seemingly safe environment while Julia is forced to find other means to feed her need for magic. This, of course, causes some issues. Not the least of which is Julia being horribly violated by a demon she was tricked into trusting.

Quentin meets Eiliot and Margo (Janet in the novels), Penny and Kady, and of course Alice whom he falls in love with.  They party and study and have flings and relationships like all college kids do, just a little more desperately until a faceless entity known as The Beast begins to terrorize the campus. During all of this, they discover the children’s book about a magical land called Fillory that Quentin has been obsessed with his entire life might not only be about a real magical land but might also be the key to ridding them of The Beast.

Quentin finds Julia, together they enter the land of Fillory, and the others soon follow. They meet gods and obtain powerful artifacts to aid in their quest to slay The Beast, but sadly Julia disappears with The Beast upon his promise to rid her of her terrible pain. And we are left with the rest of the party battered and some bleeding in Fillory. While Julia, The Beast, and the knife that can slay him are all gone.

With Season 2 we find Eliot, Margo, Quentin, and Alice have become the kings and queens of Fillory, Julia has paid the price The Beast required and has lost her ability to feel real human emotions but does not feel pain as promised. Julia faces her old enemy from Season 1, Quentin winds up leaving both Fillory and Brakebills and flounders in a corporate job.

Eliot gets married and Margo betrays him to save his life and the kingdom. And then logically, they end up robbing a magical bank to find the way to defeat their new foe. Things go sideways, as they always do and in a bid to return her lost brother Alice is transformed into a Niffin when she takes too much magic into herself. All this while they deal with issues around the source of magic and the eventual loss of all magic from both realms.

That brings us to Season 3. Please watch the trailers below to see what awaits our budding magicians next. It appears to take from both the second and third books in the series so I hope you’ve read those already. If not, pick them up on Amazon and catch up.
