The real strength of Taylor’s run on Injustice 2 is the way he is able to seamlessly weave together violence and destruction with some great emotional moments. A dystopian universe like this can often feel so hopeless that it’s impossible to get invested in anyone. A perfect example is the opening segment, where Harley Quinn delivers her daughter back to her sister – but is then not quite able to let go, having finally gotten the chance to know the daughter she let go for her own safety.
But it’s a sharp whiplash from there to Ra’s Al Ghul and Gorilla Grodd working on the powerful Amazo. Ra’s is one of the most ruthless villains we’ve seen so far in the Injustice world, but Grodd may outstrip him with his sheer sadism, and it’s only through the intervention of Solovar (aligned with Ra’s, but still his voice of conscience in some ways) that a truce is brokered. Despite Ivo not believing the robot is quite ready to be deployed, Ra’s insists, and Amazo is unleashed on a small, out-of-the-way town in Arizona. Although we don’t know these people, their desperation to escape the all-powerful robot, with only their cat surviving, is very powerful.
This event sets the tone for the rest of the issue, with Bruce preparing to embark on a fact-finding mission (with some great moments between him and Selina) and even the mysterious fake Batman (probably Jason Todd) for the first time questioning the side he chose due to the sheer brutality his allies have displayed. There’s also a great breakup scene between Harley and Ivy as they realize their different sides can never be reconciled. But that last scene, as the cat from the attack on the town, is revealed to have a much bigger purpose? This series instantly became one of my most anticipated next issues.
