Awesome! I remember seeing Spirited Away for the first time as a kid, my first Miyazaki film, and it absolutely enamored me. I’ve been hooked on Ghibli since! Good luck all!
I remember seeing Spirited Away for the first time and being immersed into the world of Miyazaki. Nothing compares to that experience, but it’s amazing to see that others have been so influenced by what he’s given us. Mary and the Witch’s Flower is proof of that.
My favorite Studio Ghibli film next to kiki is Laputa Castle and I remember watching it when I was young and being totally memorize. The movie felt so long but felt there was so much happening and I really liked the action in it and the music was beautiful and really made you feel that scene. Studio Ghibli has some of the best soundtrack.

My friends were huge anime fans and they kept pestering me to watch Studio Ghibli films so I decided why not? I picked Ponyo for my first Ghibli film and I sat down with my younger siblings and watched it all the way through! I absolutely loved the art and animation and whimsy which led me to watch Totoro and Howl and Spirited away and Kiki and the more I watched the more I loved Ghibli’s aesthetic!
I don’t think Hiyao Miyazaki was on my radar until Princess Mononoke won awards in 1997-98. I believe after that (because I had to wait for Princess Mononoke to release to DVD), my first Miyazaki film may have been Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. And that led me to the mangas. I’ve been entranced by Miyazaki films ever since.
My first Ghibli movie would’ve been Totoro as a toddler since my mom and grandpa are super savvy like that, but the first one I actually remember is Laputa. I got a DVD of it for some holiday and even though I had a really small TV screen and even though it wasn’t anything like starting out seeing it in theaters, it just glued me, the children singing and the theme song in general is just one of my favorite things. The comedy and the dub are amazing too, my first clear memory is definitely sitting on the pulled out sofa bed with my friends and watching it because I just HAD to make sure everyone I knew was aware of this movies existence! Which I also did with pom poko…and howls….lololol.

“Tell us your first memories of seeing a Hiyao Miyazaki film!” I love, love, love “Spirited Away”! I watch it in Japanese with subtitles and the whole thing is just magical!
The first Ghibli film I had seem was Spirited Away. Honestly I didn’t know what to expect but was blown away. The colorfulness of Miyazaki’s films I hadn’t really seen before. One of my favorite scenes in Spirited Away is when they’re feeding No Face at the bath house and you see a sea of colorful food, so breathtaking! Miyazaki’s films just make me so happy and are some of my favorite films 🙂 I also love Joe Hisaishi’s soundtracks like the Howl’s Moving Castle theme.
The kid and I just went to all of the Ghibli Fest movies and are really missing the experience! We are looking forward to this film because it sounds like it has elements of all of our favorites. 🙂
