LEGO Celebrates 60th Anniversary With NYC LEGO Brick Stunt!

If you love LEGO and are in New York City this weekend, check out the giant 10-foot, 1200-pound LEGO brick model that LEGO just installed in Flatiron Plaza, as a NYC LEGO Brick Stunt! The brick faces the historical International Toy Center in the area that used to be known as the Toy District, and celebrates the 60th anniversary of the original LEGO brick. This huge brick (made of over 133,000 smaller bricks) is located at the intersection of 5th Avenue, Broadway, and 23rd Street in Manhattan.

Installed just this morning, here’s what it looks like! (Spoiler: It’s a giant red LEGO brick!)

You can also watch it being built by LEGO Master Builders in this time-lapse video. It was constructed at LEGO’s U.S. headquarters in Connecticut and took 350 hours to build.

If you have a chance, stop by the Flatiron Plaza in New York City and take photos of yourself with the brick. It will be there through 4pm on Sunday. If you share your photos, use the hashtag #WhatWouldYouBuild, which celebrates LEGO’s 60th anniversary, “inspiring creativity through open-ended building.”

Why don’t you spend this Sunday, January 28, the actual 60th anniversary of the introduction of the LEGO brick, building things with LEGO, especially if you can get your kids involved? Maybe even one of the 60th Anniversary Sets that I profiled recently on GeekDad. What will you build?
