Today, we welcome legendary musician and DJ Paul Oakenfold to the show. Oakenfold is one of the progenitors of electronic dance music, and if you know EDM at all, you know Oakenfold and his sound. 2017 was the 30th anniversary of his career (still going strong!), and to celebrate, he released a graphic novel memoir. Because of course!

The Wonderful World of Perfecto follows his career from Ibiza and small clubs to mega-stadium festivals and some of the largest crowds ever to his recent performance at Everest Base Camp in Nepal. It even touches on the time he got “kicked out” of China, which holds a special place in my heart since it was one of the times I saw him perform. (I saw him in Shanghai on that tour.)

I also saw him at Coachella way back in 2002. Which was the third Coachella ever. So fair warning that I break out my hipster hat and talk about how I was at Coachella before it was cool.

On this episode, we talk to Oakenfold about why he chose the graphic novel format, the unparalleled support he received from his family early in his career, “discovering” DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, traveling the world, performing at Everest Base Camp, the changing nature of his audience, and where he’s going next.
