We Are Entertained - Coco

This week the boys feasted on Pixar’s latest animated wonder Coco. Much like the actual theater experience, if all you’re interested in is hearing what they thought, feel free to fast-forward through the insufferable Disney/Frozen nonsense at the beginning. Bonus points if you can guess which of us got up and walked out of the theater to complain about the wrong movie being played!

Richard kicks things off this week by revisiting a movie that we all wanted to watch back in 2015 but somehow just forgot about. Could it be cooking show burnout that turned us away? Or did we just assume we were the wrong audience for this discount Matthew McConaughey aka Bradley Cooper culinary masterpiece? Do you remember this one? Did you see it? Was there Oscar buzz? Listen in and find out what Richard thought about it!

Matt and Chris collided in the maelström of Netflix’s algorithms this week and both checked out a movie with a title as bizarre as the IMDB cast list in Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond – Featuring A Very Special Contractually Obligated Mention Of Tony Clifton. This film is a meta-documentary which follows Jim Carrey into a warped method acting black hole during his portrayal of Andy Kaufman in the 1999 Kaufman documentary Man on the Moon. The movie winds up being as much a biography of Carrey’s career in film as it is a case study in what diving deep into another person’s life can do to your psyche. In the end, neither of us were quite sure what we watched. Have you seen it? Let us know what you think!

Finally, we get to this week’s feature, Coco. This is one of those rare episodes where everyone (spoiler alert) absolutely loved the film, and that freed the conversation to take wild and wooly turns that have to be heard to be believed. There are certainly mild spoilers, and the payoff is good enough that you should definitely watch the film before you listen just to prevent anything from being taken away from the experience. Bonus celebrity crush news–Chris got to meet Jaime Camil who voices Papá in Coco a few weeks ago at a Nascar race (of all places) and got a picture to prove it!

Stay tuned for next week’s show on Ladybird!
