Sholly Fisch’s Scooby-Doo Team-Up is always at its best when it’s exploring odd corners of the DCU through the eyes of our favorite mystery-seekers, and this issue takes them to the far future for a team-up with the Legion of Super-Heroes.
A surprising number of issues in this series seem to open with the gang getting kidnapped by some random heroes in need of their help, and as usual Shaggy and Scooby spend most of their time getting freaked out. There’s a ghost as usual, but unlike the usual ghost or monster, this one is actually a dead person, or so it seems – Ferro Lad or his ghost. The most iconic Legionnaire to fall in battle, his sacrifice remains an open wound for the Legion, so it adds some major emotional context to the issue.
Fisch, as always, does his research, and the plot points in this issue draw directly from the Legion’s history. Who remembered that Ferro Lad had a twin brother? He’s naturally suspect #1, but he actually has an airtight alibi and no resentment over his brother’s death. If there’s one problem with this issue, it’s that if you look closely at the “Ghost”, it’s fairly obvious who the culprit is – there’s only one Legion villain who can create green-colored projections. But the issue is packed with Legion references and easter eggs, and as there’s no actual Legion comic on the stands and hasn’t been since roughly 2014, this book serves to scratch that itch nicely.
Scooby-Doo Team-Up is serving a great purpose by introducing a new generation of readers to some of the less familiar inhabitants of the DCU, and for that alone it’s a worthy read.
