So what is this? Well, if you’ve got the book on your to-read list (and you really, really should), then this is a STRONG suggestion that you opt for the Audible-exclusive audiobook version. Why? Rosario Flippin’ Dawson, that’s why.
Listen, I’ve been a major fan of Dawson’s since I first snuck out of the house with my best friend in 1995 to see Kids in the theater. That film made a HUGE impression on me (and if you’ve ever seen it, you know why), but 15-year-old Rosario Dawson talking – quite colorfully – about hardcore . . . ahem . . . adult activities blew my mind. Despite being the same age as Dawson and most of the rest of that cast, they occupied a world I never knew existed. Dawson showed me just how sheltered my life truly was.
It was just an upward trajectory from there. Josie and the Pussycats. Rent. Sin City. Clerks II. Plus so many more. And of course her run as Claire Temple in Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders has been the highlight of many of those shows. She just continues to kick ass, steal hearts (mine, notably), and be a genuine phenomenon.
So . . . Artemis. Dawson narrates the book and brings Jazz Bashara’s story to life in a way that’s impossible to do in your own, untrained, decidedly not Rosario Dawson brain.
