Today, we’re excited to bring you our conversation with Geof Darrow. Darrow is largely known for his incredibly detailed artwork on graphic novels Hard Boiled, Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, Shaolin Cowboy, and many more. The hyper-violent Shaolin Cowboy is where much of his energy has been focused lately, and the recent trade collection, Who’ll Stop the Reign?, is more of what you’ve come to love about the book. In short, it’s a bloody takedown of contemporary culture, cell phones, and Donald Trump.

Darrow is also a regular collaborator on Wachowski films, serving as a conceptual designer on The Matrix trilogy and Speed Racer. And if you go back even farther, he cut his teeth as a character designer for Hanna-Barbera.

On this episode, we talk about Lead Poisoning (Dark Horse’s gorgeous art book collecting some of his pencil art), his notorious attention to detail, Shaolin Cowboy, mixing politics and social satire in the pages of his books, and how he translated his experience with properties such as Super Friends and Richie Rich into the hyper-violent, hyper-detailed graphic novels for which he’s known.
