Kickstarter Alert ‘Cthulhu Wars Onslaught 3’

Petersen Games continues to build upon their wildly successful Cthulhu Wars franchise. Onslaught 3 brings us four new factions, an entirely new way to play the game, and an even deeper dive into the mythos. I have the core Cthulhu Wars game and the Windwalker expansion and my son I try to play it as often as we can. The asymmetric nature of the game keeps it interesting and strategies vary by faction and player. I’m still on the fence about backing this Kickstarter. Will my wants outweigh the needs of my wallet? Regardless of my decision, I am confident that Petersen Games are capable of delivering a great and fun to play game.

The Ancients Faction from Petersen Games’ Kickstarter, Cthulhu Wars: Onslaught 3

The Ancients Faction — Based on Lovecraft’s tale, The Mound, this faction features the underground dwelling humans as acolytes. Accompanying the scientifically advanced inhabitants of K’n-yan are their Un-man slaves, reanimated dead warriors, and the reptilian allies the Yothan. I’m eager to see how this faction plays and what strengths and weakness they have. I didn’t see mention of a great one for the Ancients, so it may be that they play similar to the Invisible God in Gods War.

Shaggai Map — New map, new game style. The video doesn’t tell us much other than we attempt to gain territory. The worms of Groth appear to destroy territories, but I can’t tell if this is a timed game event, or something different. I expect we’ll learn more as the campaign continues and stretch goals are reached.

Beyond Time and Space — Adds a couple new entities to the game, the Wamps and the Hound of Tindhlos. The sculpt for both of these look great. We don’t know exactly how they play, but the video hints that the Wamps are placed by your opponent, and the hound dominates gated regions. Regardless of how these new entities play they are sure to make the game more interesting.

Dire Cthulhu from Petersen Games’ Kickstarter, Cthulhu Wars: Onslaught 3

Cthulhu Wars: Onslaught 3 has reached their goal and already blown through a number of stretch goals. Most of the stretch goals are available to all backers, either included outright, or available as an add-on. Also available through this Kickstarter is the base game, all prior expansions, and a number of other goodies that are difficult to find for sale. Entry level for the campaign is $150 which includes many of the stretch goals. If you want it all there’s even a Great Old One level for $750 which appears to include most things ever published by Petersen Games for Cthulhu Wars. If I do end up backing this it will most likely be at the Acolyte level for $200. This is the first tier that gets the Dire Cthulhu sculpt.
