For the last year, Diamond Bookshelf has developed a host of different tools to increase literacy through graphic novels and comics for all ages. This weekend, they’re heading for Chicago to attend the 2017 ALA Annual Conference, and they are offering some really good panels to attend, such as:
- Comics at the Frontier of a New Literary Movement
- Comics for Teens: Discovery in the Library
- Graphic Novel Friday Forum: Read More, Read Better – Learning with Comics and Graphic Novels

They are also producing two interesting resources on their website. The first is their Graphic Novel and Comic Book lesson plans, based on the National Core Standards, for all reading levels.
The second is their magazine, an online magazine that is now on issue number 23; the latest four issues are available to read digitally for free.
I think Diamond Bookshelf is doing something good here, or at least they are on the right track: looking to improve literacy and taking advantage of existing resources. If you are homeschooling your kids, or you’re a teacher looking for new ways to engage students through comics, these resources are for you. They may not be able to cover every new article that is coming out from the publishing houses, but they have variety and a great catalogue to sort through. And, if you’re near the Chicago area, you should definitely include this in your weekend plans.
