To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars this week, we thought a particularly appropriate way to pop the bubbly would be a conversation with David W. Collins. And if you’re a Star Wars fan, this episode won’t disappoint.

Collins spent more than a decade working in sound design for LucasArts and had a hand in many of their classic Star Wars games. He also voiced the character of Proxy from The Force Unleashed series and contributed various voices to both The Force Awakens and Rogue One. He’s a familiar face to those who attend (or watch the livestream of) Star Wars Celebration; he was the host of the Galaxy Stage and voice of Han Solo in Smuggler’s Revenge at this year’s event in Orlando.

Despite all of that Star Wars nerd cred, his most impressive contribution to the saga might be with the Star Wars Oxygen podcast, where he analyzes John Williams’s score (across all films) in incredible and exhaustive detail. Listening to the podcast from the beginning is like a master class in music theory and Star Wars geekery.  It’s one of only two or three “must listen” podcasts for me, and I highly recommend listening to every episode.

On today’s show, we chat with Collins about this year’s Star Wars Celebration, his history with LucasArts, missed opportunities in Rogue One, the Smuggler’s trilogy of radio dramas, and Star Wars Oxygen. And we might even get to hear his favorite line from all eight films delivered in his patented (and amazing) George Lucas impression.
