This week, we’re looking into the shadows and talking to Aaron Mahnke about the phenomenon he created with Lore. The Lore podcast “exposes the darker side of history, exploring the creatures, people, and places of our wildest nightmares.” Each episode examines a dark tale from history in a style similar to a campfire experience.
It’s also completely compelling listening, and if you haven’t already subscribed, I highly recommend you go do so right now.
Today’s episode was in some respects a lesson in humility. Lore and The Great Big Beautiful Podcast debuted three days apart in March of 2015. But Lore has millions of monthly downloads, is consistently at the top of iTunes, has a book deal, and is currently getting adapted for television. We… still have a ways to go.
Nevertheless, we had a fantastic and insightful conversation with Mahnke about his journey to Lore, how none of us really has any idea what we’re doing, his creative process for creating each episode, his advice for people struggling to find an audience for their art, and how fatherhood shapes what he does.
