This week, we welcome Jamie Broadnax, creator of the Black Girl Nerds online community, website, and podcast. If you’re unfamiliar with Black Girl Nerds, her own description is (obviously) on point: “Black Girl Nerds is a place for women of color with various eccentricities to express themselves freely and embrace who they are.  This is not a site exclusively for Black women.  It’s for ALL women who are just as nerdy as we are and the men who love and appreciate us.”

In short, it’s a wonderfully inclusive place that has created an incredible – and incredibly vibrant – community.

On this episode, we chat about geek icons, the various meanings of fanboy and fangirl, representation in Star Wars, Universal Fan Con (a brand-new convention that celebrates the power of inclusion and representation), and politics. Sorry about that. I know we try to avoid politics on this show, but the current political climate has made that increasingly difficult. So, among other things, we touch on how we can balance our passions for aspects of pop culture with the current state of the country.

We also talk about Jamie’s newest podcast series – Misty Knight’s Uninformed Afro – which highlights and dives into the history of several female African American comic book characters.
