One of the highlights of our not-so-wonderful 2016 was the revival of Voltron by DreamWorks Animation and Netflix. Voltron: Legendary Defender made new fans of my wife and kids, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting new episodes ever since the cliffhanger ending of the first season.
Well, I’ve gotten a sneak peek at the beginning of Season 2, and while I won’t reveal too much, I can tell you that I’m excited to find out what happens next. Now, if you haven’t watched the first season yet, you may want to avoid the rest of this post because there will be Season 1 spoilers.
At the end of Season 1, the castle is escaping in a wormhole when Haggar casts some sort of spell on the wormhole. Princess Allura and Coran lose control of the castle, and the lions themselves are flung out of the castle and the wormhole into parts unknown—and then the season ends.
Season 2 picks up right where we left off—in fact, it replays the ending of Season 1 just in case you somehow forgot that the lions have been flung apart into unknown parts of the universe. A couple of the lions end up in pairs, but everyone is trying to figure out what happened and how to get back to the others. Meanwhile, Allura and Coran have their hands full, as the malfunctioning wormhole produces some weird (and fairly entertaining) side effects. The first two episodes focus on the characters as they find their way back together. (Um, spoiler alert: the lions do eventually get back in one place—otherwise this might make for a very sad season.)
Interestingly, the trailer that had been released back in October has been made private and this new trailer was posted yesterday:
The original trailer, if you recall, had Shiro telling Keith that if anything happened to him, he wanted Keith to lead Voltron, and there was some other ominous imagery that made it look like things weren’t going to go so well for Shiro. This new trailer doesn’t show any of that, but instead focuses on Zarkon’s uncanny ability to track Voltron down, no matter where they go. Does that mean Shiro is definitely safe, or is that just a little bit of misdirection? Well, we’ll find out soon enough.
Season 2 premieres on January 20, 2017, so put on your helmets, grab your bayards, and strap in. (Or do they strap in? Actually, I don’t think they have seat belts in those lions, do they?)
