breath of the wild -- life in the ruins

New Details Revealed for ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’

Gaming Videogames

Yesterday, Nintendo revealed yet another awe-inspiring video trailer for the upcoming Wii U (and Switch!) game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Entitled “Life in the Ruins,” it features more footage of delicately watercolored landscapes, fierce battles against otherworldly foes, distinctly unnerving automatons, and positively apocalyptic destruction!

Like the game’s previous trailers, it seems to provide more questions than answers. We have Link, sure, and a glimpse of the princess. We see another unique (yet inevitably imperiled) land of Hyrule. And the interstitials–clearly showing a tapestry that represents this world’s own distinct mythology–give us some broader hints of what we are watching as it unfolds. But hints are all we’re truly given.

Thankfully, Nintendo also released a second video with at least a slightly more concrete view of this much-anticipated next chapter in the LoZ saga. It features Bill Trinen, NOA’s Senior Product Marketing Manager, and Nate Bihldorff, Localization Manager at the Nintendo Treehouse, participating in some genuine, honest-to-goodness Breath of the Wild gameplay.

Though obviously heavily edited, it does afford us a look at an in-game mission (the search for a particular shrine), one of the title’s NPCs (Kass the minstrel), and a lot of combat. On display in the latter is everything from a couple of different Lizalfos enemy types–and a massive Moblin miniboss!–to some early impressions of the weapons’ durability system.

Again, not much. But, hey, it’s something!
