‘My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: A Pony Kind of Christmas’

My ears have gotten a little bit of a holiday music reprieve from the usual with My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: A Pony Kind of Christmas this year. It’s the first MLP album to be released in an actual CD form instead of 100% digitally.

The name of the album may sound familiar to pony fans. That’s because A Pony Kind of Christmas was released last year on iTunes. For the CD release, they’ve added five new songs, all from the MLP episode, “A Hearth’s Warming Tail” aka, a My Little Pony version of A Christmas Carol. In addition to the new songs, the CD includes a fold out poster with artwork from the episode.

Here’s the track listing, with the new tracks in bold:

  1. “It’s a Pony Kind of Christmas” (Performed By: Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Fluttershy & Phoenix Chamber Choir)
  2.  “Jingle Bells” (Performed By: Rainbow Dash)
  3.  “Deck the Halls” (Performed By: Rarity, Phoenix Chamber Choir)
  4.  “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” (Performed By: Twilight Sparkle & Phoenix Chamber Choir)
  5.  “Silent Night” (Performed By: Fluttershy & Phoenix Chamber Choir)
  6.  “Twelve Days of Christmas” (Performed By: Pinkie Pie)
  7.  “Last Year I Got Coal for Christmas” (Performed By: Pop Fly)
  8. “Jolly Ol’ St. Nick” (Performed By: Spike)
  9.  “Days Gone By – Auld Lang Syne” (Performed By: Applejack, Applebloom, Granny Smith)
  10.  “The Heart Carol” (Performed By: Phoenix Chamber Choir)
  11.  “Hearth’s Warming Eve Is Here Once Again” (Performed By: Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Applejack & Rarity)
  12.  “Say Goodbye to the Holiday” (Performed By: Starlight Glimmer)
  13.  “The Seeds of the Past” (Performed By: Applejack & Starlight Glimmer)
  14. “Pinkie’s Present” (Performed By: Pinkie Pie)
  15. “Luna’s Future” (Performed By: Princess Luna)

I’ve been listening to the album all day at work (seriously, I started at 9 a.m. and it’s now after 3 p.m.). As of this moment, it hasn’t driven me to strangle anyone with tinsel, so it passes the, “can my kids play it all day and me not want some spiked eggnog” test.

Some of the songs have a jazz feel to them which is new for the pony franchise, but a welcome addition to their musical repertoire.
