GeekMom Holiday Gift Guide #7: Last Minute Ideas

Next up in this year’s holiday gift guides: Last Minute Ideas! Read about a few of our favorites from 2016. The GeekMom guides will run each week on Tuesday mornings.

Unless you know exactly what TV show, movie, book, or game the little ones on your list are obsessed with this year, it can be tough to shop for them. Especially this late in the season. This Razor electric scooter is an easy, crowd-pleasing gift for any young nieces and nephews left on your list. We’ve seen it for as low as $50 throughout the holidays, and it comes in this blue/green version or in pink. It’s ages 3+, and it holds riders up to 48 pounds. Jackie’s almost-5-year-old daughter weighs about 43 pounds, so you get an idea of how much mileage the kindergarten set can get here.

Mfg: Moleskine
Price: $24.95
Purchase: Moleskine Harry Potter Notebooks

We solemnly swear we are up to no good with Moleskine’s latest pop culture addition. Jackie is still so excited about Moleskine’s two Harry Potter-themed notebooks, released in October (link to past post: https://geekdad.com/2016/10/harry-potter-moleskines/). And a geeky, literary notebook is pretty much the definition of an awesome last minute gift for a fellow lit nerd friend or family member. Amazon doesn’t seem to have them in stock, but last time we checked they were still very available online and in store from Barnes and Noble.

Price: $16
Purchase: Bead Sparkle

Full disclosure: Susan Beal is a friend and fellow resident of Portland, Oregon, but I would recommend her craft books even if I didn’t know her. In this book, she provides clear instructions and descriptions of techniques for making all sorts of jewelry, from necklaces to barettes and hair combs. Fun for both parents and older kids.

Suggested By: Patricia Vollmer
Mfg: Disney Animation Studios
Price: $19.99
Purchase: Beauty and the Beast 25th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray and Digital HD

How many of you remember the magic of first seeing Disney captivating Beauty and the Beast? I remember being in awe of the CGI-enhanced reflections in the floor during that iconic dance scene. Disney has presented the original theatrical version of the film, along with three other versions on their 25th Anniversary Blu-ray and Digital HD release. We’ve been especially enjoying the sing-along version, where kids (or you) can select the songs you want to sing over…and over…and over again.

Be sure to also explore the special features. My favorites are “Menken and Friends: 25 Years of Musical Inspiration” featuring not just Alan Menken, but also some of GeekMom’s favorite composers, such as Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Lin-Manuel Miranda, “#1074: Walt, Fairy Tales, & ‘Beauty and the Beast'” which discusses the two previous attempts during Walt Disney’s living years to adapt the fairy tale to the big screen, and “The Recording Sessions,” where you can enjoy performances of the songs “Belle” and “Be Our Guest” with video of the voice actors side by side with the animation.
