Cosplay is becoming more and more popular around the world and at conventions. I’ve personally found a lot of joy and personal confidence doing cosplay at conventions, and the number one reason I started was as an activity with my son. After seeing a great panel about Cosplay Families at Rose City Comic Con a couple of weeks ago, I thought it would be a great opportunity to talk to parents and families who cosplay and spotlight them here on GeekDad!
Cosplay Family Spotlight is a new recurring segment where I interview and spotlight a cosplay family. This week, I interview Noctilian. Everytime I do one of these, I learn amazing new things. Noctilian has introduced me to the world of motocosplay. Check out the interview and photos below for more details, but it’s a terrific mash-uprriage of motorcycle riding and gear and cosplay!

- How many members of your family are involved in cosplay?
- Noctilian:
- Three family members: myself, my six-year-old son, Ethan, and Cam (@goodbye_puddin).
- GeekDad:
- How did you and your family get in to cosplay and prop/armor making? Did one particular member start it or did you all jump in together? What was your first cosplay?
- Noctilian:
I really started to cosplay in 2010 as The Dark Knight. I’ve been dressing my son up as The Boy Wonder, Robin, since he was an infant. I met my significant other from my #motocosplay.- GeekDad:
- Do you have a favorite cosplay of yours? A favorite group cosplay you’ve done as a family?
- Noctilian:
Moto-Stormtrooper for me. Favorite group cosplay would have to be our #motocosplay of Batman/Robin/Catwoman.
Cam: Moto-Harley Quinn.- GeekDad:
- Speaking of group cosplay, do you always try to cosplay together? Or do you all do your own thing?
- Noctilian:
Yes, we always try to cosplay together. It is so much more enjoyable as a family, especially if we are all on the same theme/team. It builds towards a better family bond.- GeekDad:
- What’s your favorite “medium” to work in (sewing, EVA foam, resin casting, etc.)?
- Noctilian:
EVA foam and Sewing.
Cam: Sewing.- GeekDad:
- It’s been awhile, but I used to do quite a bit of scale model building and I see a lot of similarities in techniques between small-scale building and prop and armor building. Have you ever done any scale modeling or smaller scale builds?
- Noctilian:
- Not yet, would like to get into that in the future.
- GeekDad:
- Most of our readers are parents and, like me, want to share their geeky interests with their kids. I’ve been doing father and son cosplay with my son since he was born. Do you have any suggestions on how parents can get their kids interested and involved with cosplay and fabrication?
- Noctilian:
Dress them up from birth for any holiday event and never stop. Find what characters they love. From a cereal box toon to the goons at the amusement theme parks, help them transform into their hero. Kids always love to create and build.- GeekDad:
- Something along the lines of “Being a geek isn’t about what you love but how you love it,” is sort of the new geek mantra. Do you have anything, besides cosplay, that you consider yourself a geek about?
- Noctilian:
Motorcycles, weapons, and flashlights.
Cam: Motorcycles and cooking.- GeekDad:
- What upcoming conventions do you have on your schedule that people could see you at?
- Noctilian:
- If you’re from Southern California, we frequent the Frank & Son Collectible Show in the City of Industry. In 2017, we’ll be at Anime Expo, Stan Lee’s Los Angeles Comic Con (formerly Comikaze), San Diego Comic Fest, Long Beach Comic Expo, Wondercon, Comic-con International San Diego, and ConDor.
