Back in September, I brought you word of Sock It To Me’s 2016 Global Design-A-Sock Contest. Before it was all said and done, SITM received some 5,300 entries from more than 75 countries–including Russia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Singapore, Croatia, Botswana, and Rwanda–by designers ages 4 to 70!
After much deliberation by the competition’s celebrity judges, the following winners were chosen:
- 1st Place: “Deep Into the Sea” designed by Juan Pablo Esquivel, a 20-year-old industrial design student from Cali, Columbia.
- 2nd Place: “Yonder Castle” designed by Grant Thackray, a 23-year-old digital artist from Oregon, USA.
- 3rd Place: “Foxes in Boxes” designed by Alina Chetcuti, a 21-year-old student from California, USA.
This 12th annual contest also allowed Sock It To Me to get a better idea of global consumer trends… at least as far as they concern novelty sock design. Popular motifs included popcorn, watermelon, floral and leaf patterns, nautical themes, sports, space, succulents, and flamingos. SITM also received a number of truly unique (read: totally bizarre) entries like a dancing bearded man, an alien with yet another alien growing out of its tongue, and one of those wacky, wavy inflatable tube guys–you know, like that one outside of your local tire place.
Looking forward, Sock It To Me has also rolled out a new design for Thanksgiving. The team has even pulled together a special holiday gift guide to help assure everyone on your list receives the proper seasonal socks and undies.
